Preface
Yinxu, located in Anyang, China, is a World Heritage Site, standing as a testament to the grandeur of the Bronze Age Shang Dynasty. From the 13th to the 11th century BCE, the Shang people built a sprawling capital city centred on Xiaotun, creating a sophisticated and powerful civilization. For over ninety years since 1928, Chinese archaeologists have excavated Yinxu, uncovering a wealth of material remains that reveal the citys grandeur and complexity. Among significant discoveries are temples, palaces, the royal cemetery, residential buildings, tombs, workshops, and the remains of Huanbei City Site from the middle Shang period. In addition, the excavations have also yielded hundreds of thousands of oracle bone inscriptions, bronze vessels, jade objects, bone tools and ornaments, and pottery. These findings not only confirm the historical records about the Shang Dynasty but also provide a detailed picture of the society and culture of the time. In 2006, Yinxu was inscribed on the World Heritage List, and the international community recognized its universal significance and value. This recognition provides strong support for enhancing national selfconfidence and selfstrengthening.
In recent years, the archaeological investigation at Yinxu has entered a new phase, guided by new ideals and methods. Excavations at Xiaotunrsquo;s palace and temple complex, the royal cemetery, the workshops at Huanbei, and the previously considered fringe areas have yielded a wealth of new discoveries. These finds not only bolster the historical record of the Great Settlement Shang found in the oracle bones inscriptions but also paint a more complete and vivid picture of the Shang civilization.
Yinxu has been a place I have longed to visit. On October 28, 2022, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to Yinxu on his first domestic travel after the 20th Party Congress and made important remarks To understand better and pass on the rich tradition of our culture through the excavation, research and conservation of cultural heritage.
To implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinpings remarks on Yinxu and to introduce the new advances and achievements of archaeological discoveries to the general public, the Publicity Department of the CPC Anyang Municipal Committee and the Anyang Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage jointly organize this exhibition in partnership with the XiaShang Archaeology Committee of the Archaeological Society of China and the XiaShangZhou Research Department of the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. based on the last ten years of archaeological excavations and research at Yinxu, this exhibition features newly excavated artifacts. It aims to offer new insights into the understanding of Yinxu and the Great Settlement Shang. Additionally, it will demonstrate these findings profound role and farreaching impact on Chinese civilization and history to bring the glorious chapter of a thriving ancient capital and a brilliant Anyang to life for visitors. The exhibition also aims to contribute to building a modern regional central city and realizing the grand blueprint outlined in the 20th Party Congress report.
Postscript
Yinxu is a capital site of the later Shang Dynasty, the first historically documented dynasty in China, verified by archaeological findings and oracle bone inscriptions. Through more than 90 years of archaeological excavation and research, beginning with the search for oracle bone inscriptions, the archaeology of Yinxu has transcended traditional artifactbased methodologies and entered a new phase of learning not just about the artifacts from that time but also about the people who lived there and their beliefs, primarily due to the adoption of the concepts of settlement archaeology, the commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, and the tireless efforts of generations of archaeologists. We are getting a better understanding of what life was like at the Great Settlement Shang as recorded in the oracle bone inscriptions.
Recent years we have seen a wealth of new discoveries from excavations in the key conservation areas at Yinxu, including road and water networks, craft workshops, and neighbourhood settlements. These findings, along with those from excavations in the surrounding settlements of Yinxu, such as Xindian, Taojiaying, and Shaojiapang, have updated our knowledge of the Yinxu and the Shang civilization continuously. These discoveries provide valuable insights and references for a deeper understanding of Chinese civilization and can aid in utilizing the past for the betterment of modern Chinese civilization.
The current exhibition is grounded in the recent decadersquo;s achievements in archaeological excavations, conservation and utilization at Yinxu. It aims to reveal to the general public how our ancestors, step by step, created the glorious Great Settlement Shang and the Shang civilization, which flourished over 3,000 years ago. The exhibition has been greatly supported and guided by the Anyang Workstation of the Institute of Archaeology, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Anyang Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology. It has also drawn upon the expertise and suggestions of various scholarly voices. Despite the time and academic capacity limitation, there may be some oversights, for which we extend our apologies. We remain committed to the future exhibitions ongoing enrichment and refinement.
We wish all the visitors a happy Chinese New Year and the prosperity and flourishing of our great motherland.
